Heidi Mottram had an immaculate fashion resume even before her line was established in 2007. After being awarded degrees from both Central St Martins and the London College of Fashion, Heidi went on to work at Vivienne Westwood and Matthew Williamson. The Heidi Mottram line of bags and purses are produced purely from eel skin, a remarkable and under-used material.

            While she was travelling and searching for design inspiration, Heidi Mottram learnt about the properties of eel skin, and she was amazed that it was so scarcely used in the fashion industry. Eel skin is incredibly light, and becomes more supple and softer with use. It is also an ethical skin, as it is a by-product of fishing. Unlike other leathers, if eel skin gets wet it does not watermark, and it is more than two times stronger than cowhide.

            Although the material used in Heidi Mottram’s line is incredible, it is her design talent and innovation that make her pieces beautiful. She is inspired by the meandering lines and curves of the natural world, and uses folding, pleating and ruching techniques to achieve this in her bags and purses. Heidi also likes to give her seemingly naturalistic pieces a playful and modern twist, in the form of her signature fuchsia pink zip. One of the most visually interesting and unique things about Heidi Mottram bags and purses is the use of colour and texture, particularly in her pin-tucked pieces.

            Heidi Mottram is fast becoming a globally lusted after brand, sold in Paris, London, Tokyo, and LA. This is not only because of her incredible eel-skin material, ‘the silk of the sea,’ but for her creative and unique design perspective.
